Bob’s Janitorial & KBIG: Building Local Partnerships That Last
July 1, 2025Summer doesn’t just mean longer days – it means higher risks. When temperatures climb, so does the threat of heat stress. And for those working outdoors or in high-heat environments, that risk can be fatal.
Extreme heat is becoming more common across the U.S., putting more workers at risk for serious, job-related illness and injury. And while construction workers make up just 6% of the U.S. workforce, they account for over a third of all heat-related workplace deaths.
As a partner in the building industry, we believe every worker deserves a safe worksite. Check out these key heat safety tips to help you stay protected and productive all summer long.
10 Heat Safety Tips to Keep Cool on the Job
1. Start Slow and Build Up
New or returning to work? Don’t rush it. Most heat illness fatalities happen within the first few days. Ease into tasks and follow OSHA’s 20% Rule: Work at full intensity for no more than 20% of your shift on day one, then increase gradually.
2. Hydrate Early and Often
Drink cool water every 15–20 minutes, even if you’re not thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol, which can speed up dehydration.
3. Take Breaks in the Shade
Designate cool areas for recovery and make breaks a regular part of your routine.
4. Dress for the Weather
Light-colored, breathable and loose-fitting clothing helps your body regulate heat. A wide-brimmed hat can also make a big difference.
5. Circulate the Air
Use fans and ventilation to move air across the skin and support sweat evaporation.
6. Time It Right
Tackle the most strenuous work during the cooler parts of the day and reserve lighter tasks for midday hours when possible.
7. Know Your Health
Preexisting conditions, medications and fitness levels affect heat tolerance. Ensure that your team is aware of its limits.
8. Watch for Warning Signs
Headaches, nausea, confusion, dry skin and dizziness can signal serious danger. If someone stops sweating, it’s an emergency. Call 911 and begin cooling them immediately.
9. Check in With Each Other
A simple “How are you holding up?” can make a huge impact. Keep an eye on your team and encourage open communication.
10. Make Safety a Habit
Build heat safety into your daily protocols. Remind your team early and often – prevention is your best defense.
