Most back and shoulder injuries in the construction industry are not caused by major accidents. They happen during routine tasks, when everyday lifting is done the wrong way.
Most strains, sprains and overexertion injuries are preventable. It starts with a brief pause before lifting. Size up the load. Consider its weight, shape and stability. If it is too heavy or awkward, get help, use a mechanical aid or break it into smaller parts. There is no advantage in pushing through a risky lift.
When lifting is necessary, proper form matters. Keep feet shoulder-width apart, bend at the knees, hold the load close and lift with the legs in one smooth motion. Avoid twisting. Turn the feet, not the spine. Make sure the path is clear before moving.
For members, reinforcing safe lifting practices protects more than individual workers. It reduces claims, supports productivity and strengthens the performance of our self-insured group. A few extra seconds of preparation can prevent injuries that impact the entire job site.
